The ages of our days.

A big man brought low by time, my neighbor pushed his wheeled walker down his long driveway just after winter sunrise. A steel cane was hooked to the basket attached to the front of the walker like a bicycle basket. At the end of the driveway, he grabbed the cane, and walked a few hobbling steps to the newspaper that was plopped near a large, wheeled garbage can. Then he bent over, and with real elegance grabbed the paper and threw it. It arced in the cold hair and landed rimlessly in the basket. Then he grabbed the garbage can pushed it in front of his walker, placed the cane in the walker basket in such a way that its rubber end, coming through the aluminum weave lodged against the garbage can. He got himself behind the walker and pushed the whole contraption up the driveway. At that moment I could see all the men he had been in his life.
