A Few U.Va. Things I Just Don't Get

In 2005, a University of Virginia communications officer got her knickers in a twist when someone suggested that for the sake of students, general public, and truth-telling the University's public relations presentation of Thomas Jefferson should be more nuanced. The suggestion was that depicting Thomas Jefferson as secular saint was turning off many of the University's constituency. Apparently the public relations operation judges such a public relations approach imprudent.

Also in 2005, the development office rejected a volunteer's offer to raise money to help the University switch from coal burning to a cleaner form of energy. A development officer explained that no one would contribute to such an effort.

In 2012, The Richmond Times Dispatch has reported that "U.Va.'s board [of visitors] spent $115,581 for the fiscal year ending June 30 on expenses that included dinners, overnight stays at luxury hotels, car and airline fares, and entertainment for spouses." The newspaper also noted that "[i]nvoices for 2010 and 2011 showed similar spending patterns by the board — a time when the university raised tuition to compensate for steep cuts in state funding."
